Batam, gokepri – PT Free The Sea, a subsidiary of German-based company PT WIK Far East, launched its eco-friendly recycling plant on March 9, 2023, at Panbil Industrial Estate Muka Kuning in Batam.
Vice Head of Batam Indonesia Free Trade Zone Authority (Bifza), Purwiyanto, attended the Grand Launching of PT. Free The Sea on Thursday, March 9th, 2023. He was accompanied by members of the Area Management and Investment Division, Sudirman Saad and Wan Darussalam, Head of Public Relations, Promotion and Protocol, Ariastuty Sirait, and Director of the Business Entity for Facilities and Environment, Binsar Tambunan.
PT Free The Sea collects plastic bottle waste from households and transforms it into PET flakes and plastic seeds, which are then used to produce coffee makers or coffee brewing machines, PT WIK’s primary product. This collaboration is aimed at educating the public on the importance of waste segregation and promoting the creation of green industries.
Purwiyanto expressed his appreciation for PT Free The Sea’s investment, which supports BP Batam’s goal of achieving the Batam Green City vision, an eco-friendly investment destination. He believes that the recycling movement will have a positive impact on the environment and help to promote green industries. He expressed hope for future investments like processing water hyacinths in the reservoir, similar to Free The Sea’s initiative.
“We greatly appreciate this investment as it supports the vision that has been set forth by the Head of BP Batam, Mr. Muhammad Rudi, to realize Batam Green City as an environmentally conscious investment destination,” said Purwiyanto.
Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs and Markus Steckhan, the Chief Strategy Officer of WIK Group, jointly cut the ribbon to launch the PT Free The Sea plant. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan praised the German company for bringing innovation to the Indonesian investment world and a mission to maintain a healthy environment for future generations.
“The investment is remarkable. Recycling plastic waste into economically valuable products. It helps to protect our environment from microplastics, which are hazardous materials for future generations,” said Luhut.
The minister also called on Batam residents to support this initiative by contributing responsibly and refraining from littering. He urged the public to help preserve the investment and to support proper waste management practices, as plastic waste pollution in water can have severe implications for future generations.
“Imagine when we throw plastic waste into the sea and then microplastics are consumed by the fish that we eat, for pregnant women this will almost certainly have an impact on their babies. Let’s support this investment. Don’t litter carelessly,” emphasized Luhut.
The launch of PT Free The Sea’s eco-friendly recycling plant is expected to aid the Indonesian government in reducing ocean plastic waste by up to 7%. International Commercial Manager WIK Group Bahri Beyhan stated that last year, the company collected around 20 million PET bottles from all over Batam and produced around one million coffee makers using upcycling materials.
